Sustainable Capitol Hill's Stitchery committee was created in a brainstorming session in the fall of 2007 when a group of us were talking about things we were going to make for holiday gifts. We had our first event - Tanks2Totes - soon after at Stitches, a great neighborhood sewing and craft store. Attendees made gorgeous tote bags from tank tops, many donated, that had seen better days.
Still focused on reusable bags, we have now expanded our raw materials to include bed sheets and other fabrics. You may see us at local festivals and events, teaching people to craft their own totes, or giving our bags away around the neighborhood.
We are pleased to say that we are positively impacting our neighborhood by providing neighbors with reusable cloth bags and thus reducing the number of plastic and paper bags taken at stores! While we have to date worked largely on creating reusable bags, we are always looking for ways to bring new life to old goods through craft.
